Matisse Thybulle: Intelligence
Our scouting grades represent the composite opinion of at least three different scouts. Each category is graded based on how we view a player’s current ability level relative to NBA players at the same position (guard, wing, forward or big). A grade of 1 indicates replacement level, a grade of 5 indicates NBA average, and a grade of 10 indicates historically elite. Our composite scouting notes help provide context for our grades.
Though Thybulle is not overly effective on the offensive end, he has shown a good understanding of spacing principles and off-ball movement; both of those skills will be critical to getting minutes at the next level. Provided he can apply his offensive game effectively, shooting spot ups and attacking the occasional warp in the defense, he should be able to stick in most rotations early.
Thybulle has outstanding defensive awareness. He recognizes and assimilates offenses quickly, learning where and when he needs to double or help. Because he is at the top of the zone he hasn't shown a lot as a communicator, though he clearly understands the function of all roles on defense. Adapting this back to playing outside the zone might take time, but he is a high IQ player who will be able to pick things up quickly.
On defense, Thybille’s decision making is nearly unimpeachable. Offensively, he is still a work in progress. He has a penchant for taking bad three-pointers instead of using the shot clock to work for a better look. He is also a mediocre passer, hardly ever “creating” baskets for teammates.
Another underrated part of his game, Thybulle is very decisive on both ends of the floor. He is quick to attack warps and is a very quick-twitch shooter in spot-up situations. He also makes great decisions about when to double down, usually holding out until the last minute to put shooters in an awkward position.
Anticipation (A to C)
A very high defensive IQ, coupled with a strong understanding of opposing offenses gives Thybulle great anticipation. He is capable of being a disruptive force at every level and usually beats opponents to the spot or lures them into poor, contested looks.
